Community Service
Troop 50 is dedicated to serving the Mahwah Community in many ways. Some of our notable community service initiatives are described below.
Scouting for Food
As Scouts, we are fortunate to have a warm meal every night. Not everyone is so lucky. That’s the genesis of Scouting for Food, our annual food collection drive. It's another reminder to our Mahwah community that Scouts are here, doing good turns. Scouting for Food takes place on two consecutive weekends typically in March. On the first weekend, Troop 50 along with Troop 258 and the Cub Scouts distribute yellow Shop-Rite bags for Scouting for Food. This allows us to let our neighbors know about the drive and prepare their donation. On the second weekend, Troop 50 & Troop 258 revisit those houses to pick up bags full of canned food, cereal, pasta, peanut butter and other nonperishable items. The Scouts deliver the food to Mahwah's Center for Food Action and sort it so it can be delivered to local families in need.
Ridge Road Cleanup
Troop 50 has "adopted" a portion of Ridge Road to clean up every year. Ridge Road is home to most of our schools and children in Mahwah. We think it's important to keep this area safe and clean for the children and to also help the environment around us.
Old Guard Trail Clean Up
The Old Guard Trail is a rugged, uphill trail for the avid hiker. However, it is filled with rocks, roots and other hazards that can potentially harm or distract the hikers. Troop 50 volunteers their time twice a year to help clean up the Old Guard Trail to help make it safer and more enjoyable for the hikers in our community.
